What was once the unlikeliest Porsche vehicle — the brand’s first bona fide SUV — now has a solid space in the lineup and a well-earned spot in many drivers’ hearts. The 2019 Porsche Cayenne rolls into a new model year with a new design and some great new features, so if your old SUV is coming off lease or getting a bit long in the tooth, it’s time to visit Porsche Nashua.
Let’s dive right in.
New Design: You’d have to look closely to notice, but the 2019 Porsche Cayenne is a new generation with a new design. The company usually redesigns with a light hand, and this iteration is no exception. The real action takes place beneath the sheet metal, with a new platform that’s stronger and lighter.
New Powerplant: The new base engine is a 340 horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that delivers 332 lb.-ft. of torque. Step up to the Porsche Cayenne S for a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6; its 440 horsepower and 402 lb.-ft. of torque shave a second off the base engine’s zero-to-sixty time. Still not enough power? The 550 horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo tacks on two more cylinders for a 3.9 second time off the line.
Air Suspension: The new Porsche Cayenne rides lower for better handling and aerodynamics, but new air suspension can significantly raise the ride height for genuine off-road capability.
Electronic Stability Control: Optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) allows for better cornering, but can also allow for a degree of independent articulation on each wheel.
PSCB: Porsche cars come with no shortage of acronyms, and this year we get a new one (and a new feature to go with it). Porsche Surface Coated Brakes are iron rotors with a layer of tungsten carbide. They provide quicker stops and longer brake life than even the brand’s other high-performance brakes.
And: Other new features include rear-wheel steering for better cornering and easier parking, staggered-width tires, adaptive Matrix LED headlights, active grille shutters, active rear spoiler, and InnoDrive adaptive cruise control inherited from the Porsche Panamera.
