2018 is a special year at Porsche Nashua. That’s because Porsche AG, whose cars we’re privileged to sell and service at our Porsche dealership near Westford MA, turns 70 years old this year. Let’s celebrate with a look at the past, present, and future of this storied brand.
Those who know automotive history may wonder why we’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of a company that was founded in 1931. That’s because, for its first several years, the company founded by Ferdinand Porsche started out as a designer and tuning house. The shift to production, which inaugurated the modern Porsche brand, wouldn’t come ’til 1948.
Even though Porsche hasn’t been in business for as long as some of its competitors, they’ve assiduously made up for lost time. Many of its models are bona fide classics. The Porsche 356, built from 1948 to 1965, counted the likes of Janis Joplin, Jerry Seinfeld, and Steve McQueen among its devotees.
McQueen holds a special place in company history. With co-driver Peter Revson, he won the three-liter class at Sebring in a Porsche 908/02 Pflunder Spyder (one of many racing wins to the company’s credit over the years). He also owned a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo, better known as the Porsche Carrera, which was auctioned for charity for nearly two million dollars.
Other icons would follow. The Porsche 911 has been in continuous production since 1963. It’s kept company over the years with the Porsche 912, the Porsche 928, and modern classics like the Porsche 718 Boxster (1996-present), Porsche Cayenne (the company’s first SUV, 2002-present) and the stylish Porsche Panamera (2010-present).
The brand endures not only for the family resemblance among its vehicles but also because there’s something deeper: a restless and relentless spirit of innovation that keeps even the longest-serving parts of the lineup fresh and vital. With the Porsche Mission E just over the horizon, it’s clear that Porsche AG is honoring its past, but also ensuring that it stays relevant for the next 70 years.
