Cruise control has been around for more than a century, but first came into widespread use in the sixties, and made its first appearance in a Porsche model in the 1976 Porsche 912. With the rise of sophisticated ECUs, sonar, and radar technology, adaptive cruise control followed, first appearing in the 2010 Porsche Panamera. The next step in cruise control is at Porsche Nashua now.
It’s called Porsche InnoDrive, and this time the 2018 Porsche Panamera has the honor of bringing the system to market. It augments the adaptive cruise control available as part of Porsche Active Safe (PAS), and will be coming to other Porsche models starting next year with the Porsche Cayenne.
In some ways, it’s similar to the ACC with which some of you are already familiar. It controls speed and braking, freeing you to focus on steering and enjoying the ride. The similarities to any manufacturer’s existing cruise control systems end there.
The adaptive control in a Porsche Macan, for instance, does a fine job on straight stretches of road or in gentle curves. However, it’s not well-suited to the kinds of winding and challenging roads that every last car company likes to feature in commercials (and which are, you have to admit, a lot of fun to drive).
Because Porsche InnoDrive doesn’t just use the usual radar technology, but also leverages cameras, GPS, and mapping to view and “interpret” the best speed for the road ahead, it’s capable of handling road geometry at speeds that normal adaptive cruise control could not. Neither system replaces the other; each is engaged when the time is right so you can give your pedal foot a rest. With Traffic Jam Assist, Porsche InnoDrive even handles congestion at speeds up to 37 miles per hour (60 km/h). For safety, the system can (and should) be overridden by the driver when conditions and judgment warrant it.
