For more than 50 years, one car has been synonymous with the Porsche brand: the 911 Porsche. To call it iconic is to practically understate matters, since few car makers can boast a car that is so instantly recognizable, and desired by collectors in both its classic and modern versions. However, at Porsche of Nashua, we’ve seen that status as something of a double-edged sword. After all, it’s hardly the first, much less only, excellent car the company has made, even if it’s overshadowed many other great Porsche cars. Case in point: the Porsche 924.¬†

The Porsche 924 is all but forgotten today except by die-hard fans. We’ve always found that a bit odd, since it’s not as though it was an especially rare model. For a twelve-year stretch from 1976 to 1988, this was the entry point to the Porsche lineup.

The Porsche 924 was a two-door 2+2 coupe with a front engine/rear-wheel-drive layout. It replaced the Porsche 914 Targa — another forgotten classic — and would be succeeded by the Porsche 944 and the short-lived Porsche 968. You can think of it as a forerunner of the current Porsche 981 (the platform that underpins the 2016 Porsche Boxster and 2016 Porsche Cayman). A handful of limited run models would be produced, including the 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GT, the Porsche 924S (1986-88), and limited Rally, SCCA, Le Mans and Carrera editions.

One of the rarer models, a Porsche 924 Carrera GTR, was built in a strictly limited edition of 19 cars as a homologation model. Built to racing specs, the car was 550 pounds lighter than its contemporary (the Porsche 924 Carrera GT) while packing a 324 horsepower punch. One of those rare cars is due on the auction block in the UK, and because of its rarity is expected to fetch a record price.

The good news is that if you’re looking for a piece of Porsche history at your local¬†Porsche dealership, you don’t need to pay a king’s ransom to get it. Come to Porsche of Nashua to test drive a modern classic like the 2016 Porsche Boxster, or to get a closer look at one of our certified pre-owned or used Porsche cars.
